Beginners’ guide to life insurance

checkboxSome questions

Before you start reading, take a few minutes to answer some questions about your current lifestyle.

  • What would happen if you were suddenly unable to work due to sickness or injury? How would you survive financially?
  • Could your spouse or partner afford to keep up mortgage payments if you were to die suddenly? What if they were to die unexpectedly?
  • Do you have children that are dependent on you - how long will this be the case?
  • Do you have any other source of income other than your salary to rely on?
  • What will your employer pay you, and for how long, if you’re unable to work?
  • Does your company offer life cover - called ‘death in service’ cover? The payout is usually a multiple of your salary. Is it enough?
  • If you have any form of protection insurance when was the last time you reviewed your cover to make sure it’s adequate? A bigger mortgage, getting married or starting a family can all affect the amount of cover you need.
